Practical 1 Study Guide Resting Metabolic Rate 1. Why do we ask the subject to fast 12 hours before the test? a. Because the nutritional state and starvation affects an  individual’s basal metabolism 2. Why do we ask the subject to get eight hours of sleep before the  test? a. Stress is another factor that can cause BMR to be above  normal. Oftentimes people who are stressed have not had  adequate sleep 3. Why do we ask the subject not to exercise 48 hours prior to the  test? a. Exercise directly prior to the test can increase the BMR above  normal levels because due to high body temperature 4. Why do we ask the subject not to have caffeine and not to smoke  the day of the test? a. Because this is a factor that can increase the BMR above  normal levels 5. What is the ideal atmosphere for this test? Why? a. In a thermoneutral environment (20-23 degrees Celsius), in the  wakeful state, lying down and relaxed, in a room free of  disturbances (mental and physical)
