Their battles were hard fought and well deserved. During their cancer battle, they had to go through an intensive journey of chemotherapy. Chemotherapy is the treatment of disease by the use of chemical substances like cytotoxic compounds. Chemotherapy is heard and known, but the beginnings of the process and the chemicals used are mainly unknown by the society. Chemotherapy has a specific history, has a specific process, and has a specific effects on the body. Chemotherapy has a specific history. The origin of chemo is a very long, with scientists trying to find a cure back in the 1800s, but the pinnacle of the revolution of chemotherapy started during World War II. According to the article “Evolution of Cancer Treatments: Chemotherapy” by the American Cancer Society, “in 1946, Naval personnel were exposed to mustard gas during military action. While scientists were studying the effect it had on the bodies, they found new toxic changes in the bone marrow cells that developed into blood cells.” This was good news during a slump of cure rates of radiation therapy. Patients were not getting cured from their cancer which lead to hospitals rapidly full of cancer patients. According to the article “Chemotherapy” by the Mayo Clinic, “surgical radiation and radiation therapy during the 1950s and 1960s, only had 33% of cancer patients that were cured by the process”.
