Professor Zettl. Midterm #2. Physics 7B, Spring 2008 Each of the 5 problems is worth 20 points. Show all work. Put a box around your final answer. One sheet of notes 8-1/2" x 11" (one side) allowed. Good luck. 1. Consider two nearly identical parallel plate capacitors with plate area A and plate separation d . The only difference between them is that Capacitor 1 has vacuum between the plates, while Capacitor 2 has a dielectric with dielectric constant K completely filling the volume between the plates. a) Determine the capacitances , C 1 and C 2 , for the two capacitors. Each capacitor is independently connected to a battery of voltage V and fully charged. The batteries are then disconnected. (In other words, both capacitors are charged so that they both have a voltage V across them.) b) Determine the charges , Q 1 and Q 2 , on the plates of the two capacitors. c) Determine the electrical potential energies , U 1 and U 2 , stored in the capacitors, and determine their sum, U T = U 1 + U 2 . You now decide to slide the dielectric slab out of Capacitor 2 and slide it fully into Capacitor 1
