Chemistry 15 (https://bspace.berkeley.edu/portal) Lecture 7 February 13, 2008 Reading assignment: Chapter: 14 Activities of Ions in Solutions of Electrolytes a) Electrostatic interactions between ions: ionic atmospheres: ions attract counter-ions by electrostatic forces electrostatic shielding effect: the effective charge of an ion is smaller than its nominal charge due to its electrostatic interactions with other ions The extent of electrostatic screening depends on the ion's charge, its ionic radius, and on the ionic strength. It becomes significant when ionic strength approaches and exceeds 1 mM level.
