Chemistry 112A Fall Semester 2008 Lectures: Course lectures : Tuesdays and Thursdays, 8:00 – 9:30 am, 2050 Valley LSB Laboratory lectures : Tuesdays, 5:00 – 6:00 pm, 100 Lewis Hall Instructors: Jon Ellman: 826 Latimer Hall, jellman@berkeley.edu Chunmei Li: Laboratory: 327 Latimer Hall, chunmeili@berkeley.edu Office Hours: Jon Ellman: Mondays, 1:30 – 3:00 pm and Thursdays, 9:30 – 11:00 am (826 Latimer Hall) Chunmei Li: Tuesdays, 1:00 – 2:00 pm and Thursdays 1:00 – 2:00 pm (327 Latimer Hall) Graduate Student Instructors: Schedules to be posted on the website Voluntary Review Session: Voluntary weekly review sessions will be given each Monday and Thursday from 5:30 – 7:00 pm in 100 Lewis Hall (begins 2 nd week of classes). The Monday and Thursday sessions cover the same material. Texts: I. Organic Chemistry by G. Marc Loudon, 4 th Edition; Oxford University Press, 2002 (the associated Study Guide and Solutions Manual is also required). II. Chemistry 112A Lab Manual available through Ned’s Berkeley Bookstore on 2476 Bancroft Avenue III. Recommended: HGS Molecular Structure Model Kits, W. H. Freeman and Co. (Ned’s Berkeley Bookstore) Grading: The course will be graded on the basis of 1000 points, which are allocated as follows: 1. There will be two midterm exams, each worth 175 points. 2. The final exam will be worth 350 points. 3. Five quizzes will be worth a total of 80 points. The four highest scores will be counted, with each quiz worth 20 points. 4. The Laboratory section is worth a total of 200 points with the lab grade accounting for 126 points, labs quizzes for 24 points, and the laboratory final for 50 points (see following pages on the laboratory portion of the course). 5.
