Atif Saleem, Chem 3AL, Section 101 Discussion: Experiment 6, Recrystallization and Melting Points My group consisted of the following people: Me, Ariya, Caroline, and John. We were given unknown solid 3G, and each person tested a particular solvent to see whether or not our unknown was soluble in it, and if so, to what extent. Ariya tested 95% ethanol, Caroline did acetone and diethyl ether, John did hexane, and I tested water. We added a few drops of our particular solvents to a test tube with approximately 80 mg of the unknown solid. Our unknown solid was insoluble in acetone, hexane, and diethyl ether even after heating acetone to 80° C and hexane to 160°C. We ruled acetone, hexane, and diethyl ether out as bad solvents because our solid was insoluble in these three liquids, and it would not recrystallize in them; defeating the purpose of lab. This left 95% ethanol and water as potentially good solvents that would help to recrystallize our unknown solid. Upon heating the 95% ethanol to 100°C, and slightly mixing the solid in water with a boiling stick, our solid dissolved respectively. After cooling both mixtures, however, crystals only managed to form in the 95% ethanol after about 7-10 minutes and none formed in the water based solution. Since 95% ethanol was the only solvent that produced crystals, that was chosen as our good solvent which we used for recrystallization. We ruled out all other solvents because either 1) Our unknown was insoluble in the particular solvent, or 2) Our unknown solid was soluble in the solvent but crystals did not form upon cooling. Our group decided on the identity of our unknown after recrystallization by
