Marine Science of the Richmond Field Station Atif Saleem Several factors significant to the Richmond Field Station are governed by the oceanographic aspect of it. By understanding the marine science behind processes that occur at the Richmond Field Station, it is then possible to predict events as well as the future of the wetland on site. The Richmond Field Station is situated on the Eastern side of the San Francisco Bay in a region known as Richmond Inner Harbor. The San Francisco Bay is an estuary, or a semi-enclosed water body where input from surrounding rivers causes mixing between saline and freshwater. The San Andreas Fault runs down through the center of the Bay to create an active margin and an erosional coast. By being an erosional coast, sedimentary particles are transported through estuarine pathways and deposited into the bay. Depending on the waves, these sediments get mixed around the bay to consequently create a dark brown complexion in the water. Main sources of pollutants in the San Francisco Bay have been deposited by processes including hydraulic mining, major oil spills in 1996 and 2007, as well as the dumping of waste. The Seneca Chemical Company which used to reside on the Richmond Field Station site was responsible for the deposition of Arsenic, Sulfur and Mercury into the Bay all of which are toxic to marine organisms in large amounts. Calcium carbonate was added in the form of powdered activated carbon in order to buffer acidity of the waters. The San Francisco Bay is classified as being HNLC, or it’s waters have high
