Relias notes- Teaching expressive languageHow people learn to speak- a critical element of encouraging and teaching language is followingmeaningful language function.Typical language development-language seems to appear automatically. The first words are the productof many prerequisite milestones that laid the path for this development.Examples: Babies crying different cries based on their needs, calming when being spoken to. Followingsounds with eyes, responding to changes in tone of voice. Looking in the direction of sound, imitatingspeech sounds.ABA approach to language development-Understanding verbal behavior, and the function of operants in speech. Applying the laws of behavior toreinforce functional operants.Mands- Demands, requests. I want that.Tacts- Contact as stimulus, “fish,” with visual of fish.Intraverbals- Response to a question, fill in the blank. How are you? I’m good.Echoic- Echoing another’s speech.Q1. Children start to use single words from 7 months to 1 year.Mands- first verbal operant obtained by children. Manding is a critical skill that allows children to getneeds met. Pulling, pointing, crying are also mands, they result in meeting the demand of the child.Language rich vs. automatic- Most children will learn to speak on their own through a language richenvironment. This is not usually how most individuals with ASD learn language. More systematic anddirect intervention is necessary for these individuals.Manding is everywhere, think of all the times we ask others for things every day. A person would be verylimited if they couldn’t access what they need and ask for it.Motivating Operations (MO) increase or decrease a consequences effect on a behavior. Thinkdeprivation, if you are hungry you have an MO for eating or manding for dessert. If you just ate 3 pizzas(satiation) you are not likely to mand for dessert.
