What is the molecular basis for the difference between different cell types (why is a heart cell different from a stem cell)? Differentiation is the process by which an ESC turns into another type of cell. Once it has been converted it is stuck as that type of cell. The molecular basis of this process is that a cell type is defined by specific genes that are turned on and others that are turned off. c.
