Unformatted text preview: BIMM100 Fall 2009 Problem 10 1. Stem cells a. Name 1 advantage and 1 disadvantage of (1) embryonic stem cells and (2) adult stem cells. ESC can differentiate into all 200 cell types in the body, but their harvest leads to ethical issues ASC less ethical issues but limited capacity to differentiate b. What does differentiation mean? What is the molecular basis for the difference between different cell types (why is a heart cell different from a stem cell)? Differentiation is the process by which an ESC turns into another type of cell. Once it has been converted it is stuck as that type of cell. The molecular basis of this process is that a cell type is defined by specific genes that are turned on and others that are turned off. c. What is a potential safety issue with injecting embryonic stem cells into adult tissues? Why does this occur? It can lead to tumor formation. Since ESC divide forever, if the ESC do not differentiate into whatever tissue they are supposed to in the adult, they will just divide limitlessly creating a...
