Physics 1405 Extra Credit Term Paper (Adapted from Bloomfield) Objective: You examine the physics of an object or situation that is of interest to you. Your research into your selected topic will give you experience: ± Finding the physics concepts that make objects or situations possible, ± Seeing the roles of physics in ordinary life, ± Distinguishing between scientific analysis and speculation, and ± Using reference sources, including books, journals, and electronic media, thoughtfully, skeptically, accurately, and ethically. Length for Term Paper: 1500-2000 words. Extra Credit: This is an extra credit assignment. You may earn as much as 5 points that will be added to your overall course grade, but you must do a good job to get any points at all. See the rubric for the scoring methodology. Sources: You are expected to have at least three sources, other than the course textbook. At least one of these three sources must not be from the internet. (There is much good information on the internet, but there is also much that is not correct.) You can find many good references at the library. Footnotes and Bibliography: You must include bibliography at the end of the paper. This includes your internet references and any experts that you consulted in your research. You must footnote sources whenever appropriate. Avoid using quotations, but if you do have quotations, then you must footnote the source. (I am not particular about the format you use for referencing/footnoting your sources, but I do expect direct uses of other peoples words or ideas to be noted.) Originality: The term paper is a pledged assignment that must be completed entirely in your own words. You may not work with anyone else on the paper. You MUST submit your term paper using Turnitin. TURNITIN, online plagiarism software, will be used for this assignment. To turn in your paper you will go to Assignments in Blackboard and submit the paper in one of these file formats: MS Word, WordPerfect, PostScript, PDF, HTML, RTF, and plain text, with a maximum size of 10MB. "Students agree that by taking this course, all required papers, exams, class projects or other assignments submitted for credit may be submitted to turnitin.com or similar third parties to review and evaluate for originality and intellectual integrity.
