Unformatted text preview: 1424 Baltagi Ibn Sina (Avicenna) (980-1037 C.E.), one of the foremost philosophers of the golden age of Islamic tradition, associates music with the theory of evolution that existed in the eleventh century. Ibn Sina considered music as a tool to preserve the species (Erlanger, 1935). As a result, he states that the nature has furnished sounds to the living species in order to identify each other, for a need to stay together, or to seek help. Humans use sounds to express feelings to match its use, such as the loudness of sound to show strength, or the softness to show mercy and weakness. The composition of these sounds is what he called a dialogue of the different emotions, feelings, and moods that humans experience. When the composition of sounds unites with music a pleasure, delightment, and delectation of the psyche arise. Al Razi (1149-1209 C.E.), one of the outstanding figures in Islamic theology, was a musician and played the Dud. He incorporated music as a therapeutic tool to soothe, tranquilize, and alleviate pain (Marhaba, 1978). The playing of music took place in the hospital of"a1Ray" city and recorded results showed the effect ofmusic on the psyche. According to al Sharif, there is a disagreement in understanding the term spiritual- ity of music. He adds that spirituality of music relates to the psyche and not to the spirit. There is no relationship between the spirit and the psyche. The simplest way for spiritual progression is seeking Allah Almighty (God) through solitude and privacy. After some time, the senses will be suspended and the mind documents and records the new knowledge observed. Attempts to seek Allah and suspend the senses pave the road to spiritual advancement. This utmost attainment of spiritual advancement is known as piety. Furthermore, a thin line connects the body to the spirit, which is labeled as emo- tions. Music affects the human emotions and through the emotions, touches the spirit. 2 We, as humans, feel that there exists a need for the arts due to an enormous, irre- sistible, and ductile sensation. Based on the above, there is a difference between the Western and Arabic interpre- tation of the term spirituality. The elevation ofthe spirit has no relation to earthly mat~ ters. For this reason music is considered an essential part of the psyche. Notes I. Dud is a short-necked, half pear-shaped, plucked lute of the Arab world, the direct ancestor of the European lute.
