Developments up till the 11th Century: During the Six Dynasties (220-589 CE): a period of division between north and south in China, with a succession of brief dynasties in both places. Buddhism flourished in this period of chaos and difficulty for people. Tang Dynasty (618-907 CE): A great period in the development of Chinese culture, especially poetry. Several schools of scholastic Buddhism (Huayan, Tiantai, and Pure Land) developed, as well as Chan (Zen) Buddhism. Chinese contacts with the home of Buddhism, India, came to an end in the 11th century. From the 1st century to 11th century, there was a constant flow of learned monks from India into China. But that flow was cut off by the Muslim conquest of northern India between 1000 and 1200. The Muslim conquest of northern India destroyed Buddhism in India.
