What Does Tao Qian Stand For? One of the truly great writers of all of Chinese literature. Perhaps China’s greatest recluse-poet. He came from the period of the first flowering of Chinese lyric poetry, the Six Dynasties (222-589 CE), a period of division, turmoil, and instability. He reflects the conflicts and contradictions of the times he lived in. His poetry best expresses the dilemma of the man of good will and cultivation born into the troubled times of medieval China. To his contemporaries, he was remarkable, not as a poet, but as a man of integrity who refused offers of employment as government officials, and preferred a life of poverty and hardship to that of comfort and respectability.
