The Literati’s Larger Ideal of Life: Frederick W. Mote, “The ideal of the cultivated life”: This is the ideal of the scholar-statesman-artist, an ideal that was developed especially during the Song Dynasty (960-1279). This is an ideal that a scholar devotes his public life to serving the society in government, and his private life to the pursuit of scholarship and art (poetry, music, calligraphy, and painting), and the art of living in general (gardening, antique collecting, furniture, etc.). We see this ideal of the cultivated life in the career of the husband of the poet Li Ch’ing-chao (aka Li Qingzhao)--Chao Ming-ch’eng (aka Zhao Mingcheng) was a minor official because he was more interested in antiquities and scholarship than in a great official career. Many great intellectuals since the Sung were able to actualize the larger ideal.
