Cecilia Li Professor Powell ENRU 1100 17 February 2009 The Basic Idea of Pride Pride is one of the seven deadly or cardinal sins. Moreover, it is the deadliest one according to the Roman Catholic Church. It is defined as a high or inordinate opinion of one’s own dignity, importance, merit, or superiority, whether as cherished in the mind or as displayed in bearing, conduct, etc (Dictionary.com). Even though this is a sin, different types of people and media still incorporate this either directly or indirectly. In particular, the music industry embodies this quite frequently in song lyrics. For example, the rapper Jin does it in his song “Got Rice?” He uses the success of Asian people as an accomplishment to be proud of. He says, “Got brains like us? Got skills like us? Got cars? Got clothes? Got girls like us? Wassup we the shit and we kill ya’ll fools we got money in the bank from our family jewels” He mentions that Asian people have money from family inheritance and are smart and competent. Jin engages this sin by showing excessive pride in the traits that Asian people have and are known for. He
