Chapter 1 - Key Terms 1. Chemistry- the study of the composition, structure, properties, and changes of matter. The “Central Science” 2. Matter- anything that occupies space and has mass; the physical material of the universe 3. Elements - cannot be separated into simpler substances by chemical means 4. Atoms- the smallest representative particle of an element 5. Property- gives a sample of matter its unique identity 6. Molecule- a combination of two or more atoms Section 1.2 1. Gas- matter that has no fixed volume or shape; it conforms to the volume and shape of its container 2. Liquid- has a distinct volume not no distinct shape 3. Solid- has both a definite shape and a definite volume; incompressible 4. States of Matter- solid, liquid, or gas 5. Pure Substances- matter that has fixed composition and distinct properties 6. Compounds- two or more elements united chemically in definite proportions 7. Law of Constant Composition- the elemental composition of a pure substance is always
