Physics 33 Mid-Term #2 Name ________________________ Friday, November 9, 2000 This test is closed book, closed notes. No calculators, please. You may use a 3” by 5”, handwritten note card. For full credit, you must explain or show how your answers are obtained. Do not state the result of a homework, in-class, or textbook problem without proof! When the answer to a problem is an expression, state the answer in simplest form. What to do if you run out of room on a page: FLIP your test and write on the back. (Which means you shouldn’t write on the back of the page on which you just ran out of room!) This test consists of 4 numbered questions on 4 pages! 1) (25 points) Two straight wires are connected to two 90 o circular arcs as shown. The arcs have radii R 1 and R 2 respectively. The system carries a current i 0 clockwise. a) (12 points) Use the Biot-Savart law 2 0 ˆ 4 r x i r ds dB π μ = (or 3 0 4 r x i r ds dB = ) to find the magnitude of the magnetic field at the center of the arcs due to the current in the arc of radius R 1 .
