Naomi Kahan Art History 1C 3:10 – 4:00 Section Assignment 1 As a response to the Reformation by the Protestant Church the Catholic Church created its own Reformation called the Counter Reformation. Catholics and Protestant had a number of differences, however one major issue the Protestants and Catholics faced was their opinion on religious art. Protestants deemed it idol worship while Catholics saw it as a valuable part of religion. In the Counter Reformation the Catholic Church set up a group to review controversial Church doctrines called the Council of Trent. One issue the Council of Trent discussed was the role of sacred images and saints’ relics in religion. They made the Catholics church stance very clear by fully supporting religious art in all its forms. In the Canons and Decrees of the Council of Trent it states that it is a huge honor to have a religious statue or painting presented in church.
