If you encounter any problem, please send an email with your question to [email protected] 2 Introduction This week we saw the historic inauguration of President Barack Obama, who was born in the state of Hawaii. Sarah Palin, the vice presidential candidate who ran with Senator McCain against President Obama was from the state of Alaska. In this problem set, we will explore the age and sex distribution of President Obama’s state of birth and Ms. Palin’s state of residence and compare them to the United States as a whole. We will do this by first downloading the appropriate data from the U.S. Census, then making population pyramids for the three geographic areas. 3 Population Pyramid A population pyramid is a graphical representation of the age and sex distribution of a population. We will use the population pyramid to examine the demographic characteristics of Hawaii, Alaska, and the U.S. .
