STUDY NOTES – UNIT II Glycolipid – phospolipid with a carbohydrate sugar attached; 9-17 sugars attached; cell to cell self recognition glycoprotein – protein in plasma membrane that hears a carbohydrate chain. phospholipid – molecule that forms the phospholipid bilayer and has a polar, hydrophilic head bonded to two hydrophobic tails. Cholesterol – a lipid that stiffens and strengthens membrane; maintains fluids simple diffusion – movement of molecules from high to low concentration. No energy needed facilitated diffusion – use of carrier protein to speed up process (diffusion with a helper) Osmosis – diffusion of water through a permeable membrane; high to low; Actin – muscle protein making up thin filaments in a sarcomere; makes muscle contraction; Equilibrium – balancing point Prokaryotic cells: no membrane-bounded nucleus Eukaryotic cell: has a nucleus Active transport – use of plasma membrane carrier protein to move molecule from low to high concentration; goes against active gradient and requires energy.
