CAUTION!!! The computer is great at taking and analyzing a large amount of data in a short period of time, but it also presents some pitfalls to the unwary. In particular, the “physics” of an experiment tends to disappear into a “black box” - the computer - becoming obscured by the process of operating the computer. The data is acquired, chewed up and digested faster than it can be thoughtfully examined and absorbed by the experimenter, whose role may be reduced to that of software “user”. Further, the data output by the computer is sometimes accorded undue respect and trust merely by virtue of its laser-jet neatness and the fact that it originated in a computer, uncontaminated by human error. Be on guard against these dangers! Maintain a healthy skepticism of computer output. Remember GIGO: garbage in, garbage out. Observe the physical experiment and its instrumentation carefully; understand thoroughly how the computer acquires the raw data and how it processes it. Figure 1. PROCEDURE 1. Examine the physical apparatus. Try out the air track, level it (if necessary), examine cart, etc. Note the cart mass m . Note that if some other object, such as your elbow, etc, comes between the Motion Sensor and the cart, the Motion Sensor will detect that foreign object, instead of the cart. Note also that the Motion Sensor detects targets only in the limited range: they must be no less than 20 cm away, nor more than about 180 cm away. << The following steps should be done with the airtrack blower OFF >> Turn ON Pasco Interface Box. v Screw X Position Blower Reflector Ultrasonic Send/ Receive Cart PASCO Interface Box Personal Computer
