YOUR TASK : (a) Find a sentence or part of a sentence in Pinker, pp. 248-249, that accounts for the linguistic UNITY OF L ATIN in the Roman period but the DIVERSITY OF THE MODERN R OMANCE LANGUAGES ; (b) state very briefly ( ONE OR TWO SENTENCES AT MOST !) how Pinker’s more general account applies to the specific case of Latin and the Romance languages. Check the LEARNED box or the INNATE box depending on whether the feature is something a child born in a Korean-speaking community would have to learn from listening to other Korean speakers or would already “know” because of an innate language instinct. * NOTE : Each feature is characterized by a general statement followed by an example. YOUR CHOICE OF LEARNED VS . “ INNATE APPLIES TO THE GENERAL STATEMENT . Obviously, the actual Korean forms in the examples would ALL be “learned”. Features of Korean LEARNED INNATE 1. Korean has words to distinguish between the sister of one’s mother and the sister of one’s father, namely, imo ‘aunt’ (if the sister of one’s mother), komo ‘aunt’ (if the sister of one’s father). 2. Korean sentences can be analyzed into phrase types such as VP, NP, PP, each of which comprises a “head” and “modifiers”. For example in the sentence Yetongsayng-i yengkuk-eyse wayo . ‘My sister is coming from England.’
