Isomers are different compounds with the same chemical formula. Constitutional isomers have different patterns of connectivity of the atoms. Stereoisomers have the same pattern of atom connectivity, but the atoms have different arrangements in space. Stereoisomers may not be interconverted by rotation about single bonds; bond breaking is required. Stereoisomers may be isolated one from the other and kept in pure form. Different conformations of a compound are not isomeric structures. They are different arrangements in space of the atoms of the same compound achieved by rotation about a single bond.
