Based on multiple lines of evidence the model of the earth shows a viscous upper mantle that underlies the lithosphere. Heat driven convection in the upper mantle generates the forces needed to move the lithospheric plates and to create spreading and subduction zones. 2) Pick any location on the Earth (other than the Bay Area), could be where your ancestors came from or a place you visited or would love to visit and identify the principal geologic hazards based on relative position to plate boundaries. Your choice, depending where you pick: a) Near a subduction boundary – highly explosive volcanism, very large earthquakes and possible tsunamis on upthrown side; very large earthquakes and tsunamis on the downthrown side.
