Rubric for 7B Spring 2009 Quiz 1
Notice that the quiz tells you to “explain” your answers.
The explanation is the most important thing and
to
explain means to use the model
that is appropriate.
For fluids this is the energy density model and so you
have to
use the entire model
.
Some of you just commented on parts of this model in your answer.
There
are
5 energy density terms
in this model and if you leave out comments on any of them then your grade will
go down because you have ignored important ideas in your explanation.

Q
10.0 Perfect answer using the transport equation, comparing a point at the bottom of the straw with a
point at the top of the straw, and explaining precisely how the only nonzero terms were the
pressure change and the gravitational potential energy change.
Then drew conclusion that the
gravitational potential energy density was highest at the top so the pressure must be smallest at the
top and just enough smaller that there is no flow.
