Eugenics Means “well-born” and well born science. The science of encouraging good offspring. This science flourished for 6 decades. It aimed to take Darwin’s ideas and apply it to mankind in an attempt to maintain the welfare of the population. British Scientist Francis Galton – he founded eugenics. Galton found inspiration in his cousin Darwin, and he liked to research everything. He believed the good traits and bad traits were inherited at birth. Hereditary determinism (before Mendel) nature is more important. 1869 – views on producing better children. Modern industrial Britain believed that the stupid people were not being picked off by natural selection. 1883 – he coined the term eugenics. Became established as a science in the 20 th century. Parameters for Eugenics: 1. Different in every country 2. No refutable eugenicist ever suggested anyone be killed Eugenics in Britain Middle and upper class approved of eugenics, they feared evolutional degeneration. They also
