Personality Notes What is personality?? personality: an individual’s characteristic pattern of thinking, acting and feeling -individual differences traits: characteristics that make people different from each other -personality implies consistency across situations -traits= average tendencies, internal characteristics, enduring over time But is personality really a function of consistent traits? situationism: view that personality is a function of situation (not internal traits) - Walter Mischel (1960s) - personality too minimal to focus on -Hartshorne & May (1928): gave grade-school kids opportunities for undetected deceit (push ups, cheating on test) -found that dishonesty in one domain was a poor prediction of dishonesty in another area -person-situation debate: stable traits or changing situations —> behavior? interactionism: personality AND situation drive behavior together -personality traits = average tendencies (shape situations) -situations vary in strength (shape personality) Personality Psychology: Historically & Today -historically —> grand theories: focus on broad, human nature analyses of personality; ex: Freudian psychoanalysis
