Popularizing Science 23:01 Through Museums, people learned about cultural and ultimately about science. It became known as the Exhibition Industry. New Museums tried to emulate the British Museum. Proprietary Museum (beginning of 19 th century) Most were funded by Philanthropist, Purpose was to highlight cultural progress Most museums failed, people didn’t care about culture and progress P. T. Barnum Created the Circus in 1974 Was the epitome of the entertainment of the masses. 1841- PT Barnum bought The American Museum on Broadway. Hired entertainers to bring people to the museum after he was done furnishing it. Showcased live animals and magicians. He advertised it greatly to get a bigger crowd. Posters and flags throughout the city. Sent his performers outside the museum By the Mid 1840s it became really famous. Accessible to everyone, not that expensive entry. By 1860s was open to blacks.
