Political Psychology I. Short Essay -- Answer one of the following two questions (30 minutes) 1. Schematic processing of information produces both efﬁciencies and error. Explain and
elaborate upon this claim in the context of what you know about schemes, providing examples
(either your own or from the reading). 2. Describe the cognitive (or memory-based) model of attitude formation and discuss how
classical. learning theories challenge this model. II. Interpretation -- Answer three of the following four questions (5 minutes each, 15
minutes total) Each of the statements below is drawn from a course reading and illustrates a psychological
concept or process that we have discussed. Identify which concept or process each statement
might be taken to represent. Be explicit, and explain your answer; a few sentences will, do here. 1. ('McClosky, Zaller, and Chong) "Only among the politically unsophisticated do we
find signiﬁcant support for the anti-regime pattern. Despite their personal idiosyncracies,
individuals who are sophisticated enough to understand the traditional patterns of political belief
in American life are highly likely to embrace one of them." 2. (Bray and Noble) "In the present experiment, high authoritarians imposed longer
sentences and reached more guilty verdicts than low authoritaﬁans." 3. (Ottati and Wyer) "Suppose, therefore, that a person who observes a political
candidate unconsciously mimics the candidate’s facial expressions. As a result, the observer
might experience affective reactions that are elicited by the observer’s own expressions. " 4. (Pettigrew and Martin) "The white observers tended to explain away both the
‘impressive’ performances of black questioners and the ’poor’ performances of the white
contestants by attribuqu them to transient factors." 111. Short Answer w Answer one of the following two questions (10 minutes) 1. Political scientists commonly ask citizens to rate their member of Congress on a 0 (very
unfavorable) to 100 (very favorable) scale. They ﬁnd that many people offer a rating of 50.
From a cognitive perspective, explain the differences between the following three causes of this

support of those who ﬁnd themselves in miserable circumstances (a noxious, dissonant state): You are now part of the glorious Cause. Reject with us your
miserable present circumstances. Look forward to the glorious
future when all will be different. The rotten present regime despises you and is responsible for your misery. The Cause will
attack the regime and lead you to the glorious future. The regime
will try to prevent this but we will triumph. Draw and label the dissonance diagram that depicts the state of affairs described by this
