English 2201 Journals Project 1 August 23, 2017 Prompt: How do I prewrite? How do I plan a paper? Why do you prewrite that way and why do you plan that way? Do those approaches work for you? Why or why not. What could you change? When I first get a writing prompt I start by writing down everything that comes to my mind about the subject and that correctly applies to the prompt. From there I narrow down the list until I have one or two things I can focus my paper on. My thesis is formed from those ideas that I have chosen. Next, I make a detailed outline about how the paragraphs are going to be ordered and structured to make sure my paper flows; from there I write my rough draft. I prewrite that way to plan and think through every aspect of my paper before ever writing my rough draft. These approaches were very well for me because it saves me time and energy in the long run because I do not have to reorganize my paper once all the paragraphs have been developed. August 25, 2017 Prompt: How does an author create credibility? How does an author create clarity? Clear thesis and examples to support Shows counter argument and disproves Illustrations to present data in a conscience/rational way Examples all tie back to the main prompt/idea the writer is trying to support The author must show sources through a works cited and in-text citations to be credible The author must also use good sources in creating their argument, it is the authors job to fact check the article/website they are using for their evidence. The author can also talk about the issue in many ways/angles to give the reader a chance to see the issue from many different aspects Knowing your audience also makes you be more specific in word choice and helps you better relate to the people you are writing to. Being consistent/don’t contradict yourself It’s important to remain neutral when writing an academic paper, an opinion piece it’s important for you to present your ideas Credentials make an author credible, audience, purpose, and experience August 28, 2017 Prompt: What characteristics do you expect of an academic article? An academic article should be very precise and well written. Academic articles are usually for a specific audience with knowledge on the subject so the author should use diction that reflects the audience. Also, they should be written in third person so there should not be any I, you, or me in the article. This shows the formality of the paper and lets the audience write in a way that does not reflect his or her own opinion. All statements should be backed up by facts with sources. Good organization will help move the paper along. Expertise in the topic is very important as well.
