Main ideas 1. Teachers have responsibility to teach the language and communication skills for career and social mobility to students come from cultures which have different language rules. 2. Dialects are associated with educational, economic, social and historical conditions. They differ but are legitimate. 3. Standard dialect is a dialect spoken by those with the highest socioeconomic status and the greatest political power. Social and regional variations may exist within standard dialects so Standard English should not be considered “Northern English” or “White English”. 4. Nonstandard dialects are spoken by people who are powerless. These dialects tend to be unacceptable to the group of people who dominate the society. 5. Nonstandard dialects exist within all racial, ethnic and regional. Each of them is legitimate and caused by different factors. 6. For a lot of reasons, nonstandard English speakers often do not effectively learn Standard English in school. 7.
