Three experiments were conducted to examine their communication behavior: (Experiment 1). In a field population, 30 crickets were collected and for every cricket their calling rate and their size were measured. The results demonstrated that smaller crickets called more than larger crickets. (Experiment 2). Using the same crickets, gonad size was examined. The results from this experiment revealed that smaller crickets invested more into gonads than larger crickets. By estimating sperm deposition, it was concluded that smaller crickets deposited more sperm per copulation than larger crickets. Larger sperm load is correlated with larger paternity in crickets. (Experiment 3). In a separate year, 100 male crickets were collected. Each cricket was placed in a small metabolic chamber and the relationship between metabolic costs and calling rate was examined.
