Unformatted text preview: Medical Effects of Chronic Alcoholism • AHS 151 • Prof. Bialstock Alcoholic • A person who is dependent on alcohol Alcoholism • Chronic alcohol abuse, resulting in impairment in health and/or social or occupational functioning. • Alcoholism results in increased adaptation to the effects of alcohol, requiring increased doses to achieve and sustain the desired effect. This is called “tolerance.” Alcoholism is a chronic illness.
