Video Source from History.com: Natives & Settlers Christopher Columbus was not the first to discover America but his discovery lead to the successful Jamestown settlement, and with it the negative stereotypes and suffering the Natives of the land had to endure from the new arrivals. Next came Christopher Columbus who began his voyages in 1492, he made it only as far as the islands of the Caribbean islands. He was not the first European to set foot in the New World – it was Vikings from Norway were the first to arrive in America and returned with stories of a rich, bountiful land, one of their biggest discoveries being grapes. His discovery brought to the New World to the attention of Europeans and lead to its exploration and colonization in the 1500s. Jim Loewen, author of Lies My Teacher Told Me, visited a living history museum in Plymouth. It is a freeze frame of what life actually was like back in Plymouth. In the video there were Native

What was especially interesting was that the actors spoke and interacted with Loewen as if they were the characters they were trying to portray. When talking to the Native American actors they spoke of not wanting to be viewed as barbaric and wild but wanted people to see that they were rich and cultured and were a successful people. And they were because the settlers would not have been able to survive had it not been for the help of Natives. As a matter of fact the settlement almost didn’t work because the colonists weren’t able to catch their own game and relied on the Indians for food. When he spoke to a colonist woman about what they planned on doing here she replied that she hoped to turn the wilderness in to civilization for both the land and the people. This is an excellent answer because that was the mentality of the people in those times....
