Andrew T. Hedrick Chem 32 Section S 10/25/02 Experiment 7 – VSEPR Theory and the Shapes of Molecules Purpose:  To use VSEPR theory and molecular models to predict the shapes of  molecules and to learn how the shape influences dipole moments. Experimental Plan:  The instructions for this plan were based on The  Thompson  General Chemistry 2  Lab Manual, pages 78-90. Changes included using a  computer program to draw Lewis structures and the molecular geometries.  Data and Observations:  Please refer to the next sheet.   Calculations:  No calculations were performed in this lab. Results:   The models that were created on the 3D modeling program are printed  out on an attached sheet. These are the 3-dimensional models that help explain  what an atom would look like. Each atom had a separate Lewis structure, and the  majority of our molecules were polar. Molecular shapes varied, and some of the
