John Jay College Vipul Rana Assignment 1: Attica as it is Now and Then As they were heading up to meet the man, Frank “Big Black” Smith and their “Attica Brothers Legal Defense” attorney Elizabeth M. Fink, they envisioned the traumatizing four-day event that took place in New York’s Attica Correctional Facility in Attica, New York. Known as New York’s heftiest security prison, holding many of New York’s most notorious criminals. It was that day September 9, 1971, almost 39 years ago the Attica Riot exploded. One of the country’s biggest riots in nearly four decades then, claiming 37 lives, nine of which were innocent guards and twenty-eight prisoner inmates. Disgusted by the event that took place months earlier on August 21s at California's San Quentin Prison where a black prisoner was shot to death by correctional officers and the Attica prison’s conditions and mistreatment at the prison triggered Attica inmates to rebel. Inmates began by massive strikes such as
