AB 4: O THER D IODE C IRCUITS I Purpose The purpose of this laboratory is to investigate a number of useful diode circuits that can be understood from the analysis of diode circuits presented in class. In particular, you will: 1. investigate the diode limiter which can prevent the input of a circuit to exceed a preset limit; 2. build a voltage doubler, an example of circuit which can be used to generate high magnitude dc voltages from low amplitude ac voltages; 3. build and analyze experimentally a peak voltage detector. In the last part of this lab, you will use the operational amplifier that you studied in EE 202. Recall that the op-amp has two inputs V in+ and V in- and one output V out . The op-amp is powered with a split supply typically V cc /-V cc = +/- 15 V. In the op-amp, the input voltages have very high impedance such that the currents flowing in or out of the op-amp inputs are near 0. When the op-amp is used “open-loop”, that is without connection between the output and the inputs, if V in+ > V in- , V out = V cc . Conversely, if V in+ < V in- , V out = -V cc . When the op-amp is used with negative feedback, that is with a current path between the output and the inverting input, the op-amp adjusts its output voltage to make the voltages at its two inputs equal to each other. 4 -Vcc Vin+ 3 5 6 Vin- 2 1 7 8 Vout +Vcc II Diode Limiter Prelab: . 1. Consider the circuit A on the left in the diagram below, what is the ouput voltage V out when V in is 0.5V, -0.5 V, 2 V, -2 V? (Use the practical diode model.) 3. For the circuit B in the middle below, what is the output voltage V out when V when V in is 0.5V, -0.5 V, 2 V, -2 V? (Use the practical diode model.) 1
