Karthik Patange 1/31/08 Their Eyes Were Watching God: Biblical Allusions 1) “A highway through de wilderness” (pg 16) - Matthew 4:1 Context for Their Eyes Were Watching God : Granny is telling Janie that she wants to see her in a secure position, which Logan Killicks could provide. She doesn’t want Janie to go through the same hardships she experienced when she was born into slavery. Nanny laid all her hopes on Janie after Janie’s mom (Leafy) ran away from her. Biblical Context: A spirit leads Jesus into the desert to be tempted by Satan. The author is trying to convey that Nanny wants to protect Janie, even if it means that she has to give up her life and Janie’s desires. She wants to protect her from any pain from the outside world. The author is trying to show that Nanny’s shielding nature is a result of the impact her past, her life as a slave, has made on her life with Janie. 2) “You got de keys to de kingdom.” (pg 109) – Matthew 16:18-19 Context for Their Eyes Were Watching God : Tea Cake leaves and comes back several times to meet Janie.
