Rubber Band Experiment The purpose of this experiment was to determine how much force rubberbands of different sizes could take before snapping. We hypothesized that there would be a positive relationship between the maximum tension of a rubberband and the rubberband’s circumference. By using a force sensor, rubberbands of three different lengths, and a stand, each rubberband was stretched from a resting point to a point where the rubberband severed. By analyzing our findings, there was no evidence of a correlation between the rubberband’s circumference and the applied force, nor was there evidence of no correlation. This laboratory experiment was significant as it consisted of two important variables, the circumference and the force applied, to determine the elasticity of an object such as a rubberband. Introduction: This report discusses an experiment to study the relationship between a rubberband’s circumference and the force applied on the rubberband. As a background, we knew that there must be a correlation between the size of the rubberband and the force applied. Since the experiment was performed in a laboratory setting, there was no considerable concern with air resistance that had to be tolerated. We hypothesized that there was a direct relationship between the maximum tension and the circumference of the rubberband. The experiment was important because it described the relationship between the applied force and the circumference of a rubberband, a material object which has an elastic force. This report presents the procedures for the experiment, the experiment’s results, and an analysis of those results. Procedure: In this experiment, at least three people were needed. Three rubberbands of different lengths, and similar widths, were used: small, medium, and large. A meter stick, with millimeter (mm) measurements, was used to measure the circumference of each rubberband. A Garner Force Sensor
