Soil Testing Soil Borings – performed to determine: Soil strata Underground voids, such as caves Proctor Test – Determines type of soil (sand vs clay) and in situ  moisture content.  Testing company usually provides a  recommendation of how to meet density requirements based off  of this test. Density Test – Determines the density of soil.  Higher density is  required for greater bearing capacity of soil.  Test is frequently a  nuclear test.  Moisture content is also given. For failed tests, the testing company typically gives a  recommendation to increase or decrease moisture content To increase moisture, you water the dirt To decrease, you turn dirt over to let the sun and wind dry it
