In each case, put your answers on the scan sheet (marked McMaster University Examination Answer Sheet). Read the Marking Directions on this sheet carefully before starting. 1. In materials selection, the materials index must satisfy which of the following: a) It must be a product of material parameters only b) It must be a function of material and design parameters only c) It must be a ratio of material parameters only d) It can be a ratio of material and design parameters e) It must be a function of material parameters only By definition, the materials index must contain material properties only. The index can be any function of material properties (it does not have to be a ratio or a product). Therefore, the correct answer is (e) “It must be a function of material parameters only”. * Part Marks: 1 mark out of 3 was given for answers (a) and (c). These answers include the important idea that the materials index should only include “material parameters”, but they are wrong because they restrict the materials index to being a product (in (a)) and a ratio (in (c)).
