Part 1: Biography Born on April 15, 1542 in Anchiano near Vinci, Leonardo Da Vinci was an Italian painter, sculptor, architect, and engineer who embodied the ideal Renaissance Man. His father, Ser Piero, was a notary and a landlord. His mother, Caterina was a peasant woman who, shortly after Leonardo's birth, married an artisan. His parents were never married, making Leonardo an illegitimate child. As a child, he was treated as a legitimate child. He lived with his father on his estate where he was educated in reading, writing, and arithmetic. Leonardo was not serious about Latin until he was older when he studied it on his own. Also, his interest in higher arithmetic levels did not come until he was 30 years old.
