Chapter 17 1. I would agree and say that this statement is true, the statement is referring to Atticus’s ability to calm those around him. For instance how he calms his children down or an angry mob. 2. Robert E. Lee was a well known Confederate general during the Civil War. Robert E. Lee was big on separating from the Union and maintaining slavery. This is interesting because Mr. Ewell shares Robert’s name (Robert E. Lee Ewell) and in a way they are both fighting for racism except Mr. Ewell isn’t fighting clean. 3. The red geraniums stand out as a contrast from the rest of the junk in the yard. I believe it symbolizes that beauty can be found even in the most hopeless of places. 4. Probably because Jem is a growing young man and in this society of racism, Jem is the higher authority, but most likely also because they both just didn’t want to waste time over the matter and miss the testimony. 5. Judge Taylor was just saying that biased people will see their own way to things and only hear what they want to hear even if it isn’t the whole truth.
