BIL 150 – Sep 04 th   Scientific Societies o National Academy of Science o Royal Society of London Levels of Biological organizations o Biosphere, ecosystem, communities, populations, organism, organs and organ  systems, tissues,  cells , organelles, molecule, atoms Three unifying concepts in biology o Cell theory Robert Hooke researched cork and termed the term “cell” Antoine Leeuwenhoek grinded a lot of lenses – he created the  microscope; looked at protist and bacteria and created drawings of them Malphigi suggested that plant leaves and stems are made of cells Leeuwenkoek hid the information about grinding lenses from the world Rudolph Virchow was the first to state that all cells come from preexisting  cells Tenets of cell theory All living things are made of cells Cells arise only from pre-existing cells All energy flow of life occurs within cells
