The most important finding was that variations in the levels of preventative patrol had no real effect on community attitudes towards police, response time, traffic accidents, or general crime (this was the Kansas City Preventive Patrol Experiment.) 2. How is the patrol function affected by the officer’s shift assignment and the nature of the beat to which he or she is assigned? There can be day shifts, swing, and graveyard shifts. The duties for that officer and the way they approach their beat depends greatly on the shift they are assigned. Day shift can entail more of a routine shift - traffic control, community events, etc. Swing shift will be more active in the sense that people are getting off work, going out and about, and it may be more unpredictable. Graveyard officers can find that they are their own beat in a way, with more independence and less people about. The nature of the beat will change with whatever is the
