Jacqueline Joseph TA Jingfang Liu Communications 310- E Journal 3 There were many issues faced when bringing Milk to the big screen. One obstacle while producing Milk was casting. Casting was an obstacle because they wanted to cast an openly gay actor in the role of Harvey Milk. Lance Black said that finding openly gay actors was difficult enough because actors and agents are afraid of losing money. Black emphasized the importance of casting a well-known actor. Harvey Milk’s role was played by Sean Penn not only because he is an award-winning actor but also because it was great advertisement for the film and without a prominent actor Milk probably would not have been as successful. Another obstacle faced during the production of Milk was the storyline. They struggled deciding what type of story they wanted to tell. They were battling the film being “too gay” so at first there were many versions of the script focused around Dan White or Diane Feinstein. Because of the homosexuality embraced by the film, many
