IF GIVEN A CHANCE SCHOLARSHIP Nominee Statement Matthew Herich Senior, Napa High School My story begins 11 years ago in the first grade when I was diagnosed with MPGN II, also known as a type of kidney disease. Ever since then I have been battling my disease with loads and loads of medications prescribed by my nephrologist, Dr. Sheldon Orloff from Kaiser in Oakland. I have undergone two biopsies over the years and I am now scheduled for an appointment at UCSF concerning dialysis and a kidney transplant where they will give us the outlay and our financial situation. My Creatinine, a vital chemical in my body, had been steadily increasing over the years. This very chemical determines my kidney function. Just recently I ended up in the ER one Saturday morning when my blood sample turned out results that startled my doctor. My Creatinine level was up to 6.8 which meant my kidneys were functioning at less than 15%. I was then transferred in an ambulance to Kaiser Oakland Hospital and admitted. There I was pumped with fluids in order to rehydrate my body and hopefully bring my numbers back to where they originally were
