The first two weeks of the course were spent discussing Ohm’s Law and developing an equivalent circuit for an excitable membrane. Now we are discussing the resting membrane potential and realize that the complete circuit for an excitable membrane can be reduced to isolate just the two elements responsible for the resting membrane potential: the currents associated with the flux of K + and Na + . a. The reduced circuit is as follows, with the arrows denoting the flow of current: For both K + and Na + , label the conductor ( g ), the battery ( E ), and the current ( I ) on the diagram. b. Given the following values, calculate the resting membrane potential ( V r ): g K = 10 µS g Na = 0.5 µS E K = +55 mV E Na = –75 mV
