The Development of American Musical Theatre Fall 2009 Core Viewing Assignment: Oklahoma! 1) When Curly goes to the smokehouse and sings “Poor Jud is Dead,” what is he suggesting to Jud? Curly is trying to suggest to Jud that he hang himself. Since Jud does not feel appreciated, Curly suggests that his death will make everyone realize how much they really care about him. 2) When Laurey falls asleep after smelling the elixir from Ali Hakim, what happens in her dream? She begins to dream of marriage with Curly. In this dream she is able to see what marriage to Curly would be like. As the dream progresses it turns into a nightmarish scene where Jud kills Curly. This makes her realize that Curly is the one, but she cant escape Jud. 3) Which character in Oklahoma! seems to have the most influence on the decisions and behavior of the community? Provide specific examples from the musical to justify your answer. Aunt Eller seems to have the most influence over the community’s decisions.
