Problem H.01 : The stepped bar ABC shown below is composed of two segments. Segment AB is a strong steel (S y = 200 MPa), and segment BC is a weak steel (S y = 50 MPa). An oblique weld exists within segment BC which has a normal strength (S y ) weld = 30 MPa and a shear strength (S vs ) weld = 15 MPa. The cross- sectional areas of segments AB and BC are 0.001 m 2 and 0.0048 m 2 , respectively. Neglect the effect of the collar in your analysis, and assume the entire structure remains in the elastic region. Determine the safety factor of the stepped bar, with respect to yielding. Note: You must check ALL conditions to receive full credit.
